Al Bashir Leadership Program: Helping East Jerusalem Apply for Benefits

The Al Bashir leadership program operates within the Social Involvement Unit in the Dean of Students Office. The program works with outstanding students from East Jerusalem. When the government decided to shut down the economy, people who found themselves suddenly without work had to scramble to apply for various social welfare services, including unemployment benefits and Bituach Leumi (social security).

While in ordinary times these processes are confusing enough, the panic of the pandemic made it even worse. Al Bashir students stepped up to the plate, offering assistance to East Jerusalem residents via an online center they established. Within a few days, over 600 inquiries had been submitted, and the students helped file 450 requests.

This program was run in collaboration with the Jerusalem Municipality and the Employment Bureau.
